Sony A7 IV officially launched: Introduces new 33-megapixel sensor and more features
Sony has finally launched the Sony A7 IV. The new mirrorless camera brings in a new 33-megapixel sensor, 4K 10-bit 60 fps video recording, and more flagship features for $2,500.
It has been three years since the Sony A7 III came out and the new A7 IV features prove to be a fitting replacement.
The new sensor adds a 36% increase in resolution. From 24.2 megapixels, the Sony A7 IV solves the concerns of some that 24 megapixels is not enough.
That being said, here are the key features of the Sony A7 IV.
- 33 megapixel BSI CMOS full-frame sensor
- 10 fps burst mode
- In-body stabilization of up to 5.5EV
- Full-width oversampled 4K from 7K for up to 30p
- Dual card slots (CFExpress Type A, and UHS-II SDXC)
- 4K/60p with Super35 and APS-C Mode
- 10-bit video recording
- H.265 video with S-Cinetone color mode
- Large 3.69-million dot OLED viewfinder
- Bluetooth connectivity.
Just by the key features alone, the A7 IV is leaps better than the previous generation. However, the $500 price increase might be too high for some.
Who is the Sony A7 IV for?
The Sony A7 IV is a worthy replacement to the Sony A7 III especially for photographers and videographers who are eyeing a new full-frame camera. The features are great and it can be considered an affordable Sony A1.
This camera, without a doubt, is a jack of all trades and it is fitting considering the higher price tag. You have access to great features whenever you wanted to.
However, the price increase might be confusing to potential buyers. The $2,5000 price tag closes the gap between the regular A7 cameras and the specialized A7-series units.
For instance, the Sony A7R IV is great for those who need a large megapixel body. It has a 61-megapixel sensor and can be had for around $3,500 brand new. The used market is also an option.
Another example is the Sony A7S III, which is around $3,500 as well. This camera has excellent video capabilities and is praised for its low light performance.
So should you get the Sony A7 IV?
However, evaluate your needs first before getting one. Sure, it is the latest base A7 model to date, but do you really need the extra features or is the Sony A7 III more than enough?
