Overview

The ProMediaGear GKJRC Katana Pro Gimbal Head with side mount clamp works the same as the regular Katana Pro with a cradle mount. However, the difference is in the mounting system.

This version has a side mount clamp, which means that the camera is directly attached to the vertical pivot point.

Compared to a cradle mount, the GKJRC Katana Pro side mount clamp version does not have as much mobility as the standard cradle mount. This is because it centers the lens around the axis of rotation at the vertical pivot.

There is an advantage to a side clamp gimbal head though - weight. This gimbal head is less bulky. It is easier to transport from one place to another.

Functionality is the same as the regular Katana Pro Gimbal Head. It is stable and can carry large lenses.

ProMediaGear creates these gimbal heads with T6061 aircraft-grade aluminum making them lightweight, durable, and easy to carry. Fluidity is no problem as well due to the sealed bearings.

What is the difference between the GKJr Katana Pro and the GK Katana GImbal Head?

The main difference between the two models is the size. The Katana Pro is more portable due to its smaller footprint.

If you have extremely large lenses and heavy setup, then the GK Katana is for you. But, if you value portability, then the GKJr Katana Pro is the one.

Will the clamp work with other brands?

Yes, the GK Katana and GKJr Katana Pro has a regular Arca-swiss clamp that allows you to use any camera accessories that has an Arca-swiss plate.

What is a side clamp gimbal?

It works by having the camera pivot up and down by its side while panning left to right through the gimbal mount.

Outstanding product, perfect for switching between stills and video

This gimbal head is just about perfect for my needs, which are to switch between stills and video with a heavy telephoto lens. I switched from a carbon fiber gimbal head for smoother panning and because the old one would recoil a bit when I locked it down, making it very difficult to center a bird. The build quality on the Katana Jr is outstanding, and the motion is very smooth. The pan and tilt knobs are capable of adjusting the tension precisely, though it takes a few seconds to get it just right. Once you get it, though, you have the best of both worlds: you can track quickly like any gimbal head, but if you stop and let go, the lens will stay exactly where you left it, with no recoil whatsoever. I’m sure a fluid head would be better if all I was doing was video, but it’s quite good at that and just about perfect for stills. It’s also, amazingly, lighter than my old carbon fiber gimbal head.
I have been using the side-mount version because it’s about half a pound lighter than with the cradle. The disadvantages are that it takes a bit longer to balance the lens and that, unless you have an L-bracket (which I don’t), you won’t be able to mount the camera in landscape orientation (if, for example, you switch to a smaller lens to take a landscape photo). Thankfully, ProMediaGear sells a conversion (A40), so if you don’t like the side mount, you can switch to the cradle.
To sum up, the Katana Jr is just about perfect for still photography with a big telephoto, quite competent for video, surprisingly light, and well made.

You'll Forget It's There

Got this along with the A40 Conversion Kit, for optimum flexibility. The gimbal is buttery smooth, quickly becoming a flow extension -- you'll forget it's there!

Best

This is one of the best gimbals I've ever used. The build quality is outstanding and the movement is super fluid. It handles the largest telephoto lens with ease. Well done!
